"Do You Need a Home Pregnancy Test?"
Do you think you might be pregnant? Are you terrified or excited? Either way, you might be able to find out quickly by
using a home pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone which is produced by the placenta during pregnancy,
called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG. If used properly, home pregnancy tests are almost as accurate as testing done by
your doctor. Plus, they are very inexpensive.

Do you know what may be early signs of pregnancy? Of course, a missed period, especially if you do not have irregular cycles, is
probably the first thing you watch for if you think you might be pregnant. But, there are some symptoms you might notice even before
your period is late. These can include tender, swollen breasts, light spotting or bleeding, nausea, headaches, mood swings, constipation, dizziness, unusual food
cravings, and increased temperature. Of course, each of these can also be symptoms of other things, including onset of your period. So, if
you notice several of these symptoms and your period is late or you have irregular cycles, you might want to try a home pregnancy test. If
the test result is positive (indicating you are pregnant), you should immediately see your nurse practitioner, midwife or physician and
begin appropriate prenatal care.
Home pregnancy tests are very accurate if used correctly. Occasionally, a test will give a false positive, meaning that is says you are
pregnant when you really are not. This can be caused by blood or protein in your urine, and by certain medications. It is more common for
a test to give a false negative result, meaning you really are pregnant even though the test says you are not. False negatives are caused
most often by taking the test too soon for accurate results. For best results, you should wait at least one week after your missed period to
take the test. Diluted urine can also interfere with accurate results, so use the test first thing in the morning before you drink anything.
Follow the instructions included with the test correctly, and if you have any questions about what to do, call the test manufacturer and
ask. If you are uncertain about your result, or if you have gotten mixed results over a couple of weeks of testing, you should see
your health care provider to make a final determination of your pregnancy.
If you discover you are pregnant and it is what you want, congratulations! Enjoy the adventure of childbearing and parenting.
